Get children to create their own word wand (be as creative as you like) and then use it to trace the magic wand shapes in the air. This is their initial basic training towards creating magic symbols with their wands.
Once familiar with the basic shapes they can have a go at combining those shapes into a complete magic symbol! This magic symbol is the letter ‘m’.
The letter ‘m’ makes a stretched sound that is made by keeping the lips closed together.
Word wizards can send their thoughts to other wizards by using symbols like these. One day your children will become word wizards!
The Wave your Wand activity is a fun way to introduce letters. The initial shapes can also be used for fine motor skills activities and resources are included to support this. Resources also include activities for cutting out letters and pasting them onto activity sheets.
These and other activities for the letter ‘m’ (and every other letter of the alphabet) are included in the Story Wizard Phonics scheme for the Early Years Foundation Stage. Magic Shapes Handwriting resources are also available independently in print, cursive and uppercase.
With Story Wizard Phonics, ‘M’ is the second letter introduced to children. On day 1 they will have learned ‘a’ (which they learn as both a letter and a word). When they learn the letter ‘m’ they can immediately see how it can be combined with the letter ‘a’ to form the word ‘am’.
The Story Wizard scheme introduces letters progressively like this to enable children to constantly consolidate their prior learning and to become familiar with combining letters into words and having a go at blending from the very beginning.
