Phonics Word Makers

One of the features of Story Wizard phonics is that the phonemes children learn are placed immediately into the context of words (read more about that here).

Another feature is that children are encouraged to have a go at writing straight away too. Handwriting becomes a specific focus after week 12 (by when all of the basic phonemes have been introduced). At this early stage children can nonetheless have a go… if they want to and providing they enjoy doing so.

The Word Line activity helps children to recognise phonemes they have learned in the context of words. This is a class activity involving some or all of the class.

The Word Maker sheets allow individual children to organise letters into words. They can do this by:
– cutting out individual letters
– sticking those letters into the relevant boxes
– having a go at tracing the letters
– having a go at writing a word themselves

Each set of Story Wizard phonics includes Word Maker sheets in both cursive and lowercase print format (choose whichever system your school uses). In a few weeks time, children will spend time exploring the shapes that make up the letters of the alphabet and perfecting their handwriting skills but in the meantime they can still have a go.

These pictures show some of the children’s first attempts. Note that in these examples the letters have been pre-cut and the sheets have been laminated so that children can have a go multiple times.

The Story Wizard phonics scheme is available here.
