Easy to follow step-by-step guidance for children and teachers that introduces the usage of capital letters and periods including how to:

– Sequence sentences to form short narratives
– Separate words with spaces
– Use spacing between words that reflects the size of the letters.
– Begin to punctuate sentences using a capital letter and a period (full stop)
– Use a capital letter for names of people, places, the days of the week, and the personal pronoun ‘I’

Explanations are provided by the Punctuation Monsters and the resources feature the theme of ‘Mermaids and Water Monsters’.

The class introduction includes class challenges with editable slides that can be used to rearrange sentences and add punctuation in order to demonstrate each method of punctuation.

Each challenge features some ‘unpunctuated text’ to be rewritten with punctuation. The challenges are based on the mermaids and water monsters theme and include creative tasks such as drawing pictures based on the sentence.

Every challenge is also provided on editable slides which can be used to demonstrate approaches to writing the sentences. (Use these to create your own challenges too!)

Each module includes a ‘Sentence Check Sheet’. These can be used for children’s general writing and include a self-check and a peer-check. The sheets are progressive so that as each method of punctuation is taught children can progress to the next check sheet and ensure that their writing uses all punctuation taught up to that point.

    A great resource – well differentiated and suits my intended purpose of using with intervention groups in Year 2. I particularly like the ‘unpunctuated’ texts as some of my target children struggle to use capital letters and full stops accurately. This was a great time saver!
